Diet and Nutrition: Getting Started

It’s all about mind control.  Self Control not restrictions, but positive reenforcement. How? well, I don’t know how it works best for you, but for me, it takes a few weeks of  “primming the wheel” to fully get started.  Basically I have to psych myself up. I use visualization, self pep talks and self affirmation to help reintroduce the forming habits of the process, eventually it becomes second nature.

Food gives a lot of people serious anxiety. For them, there could be a lot of guilt associated with food. Maybe it stems from over eating as a child, knowing what to eat to maintain good health and choosing not to, being anorexic or bulimic, 5 lbs. over weight or 30 lbs. over weight.  Honestly, the issue shouldn’t be “How thin or fat do I look” but “How healthy or unhealthy am I ?” .

Oh, I know what you’re thinking, we are bombarded with visual images that force us to think about nutrition in so many unhealthy ways. It would seem our main question about food is,   “How many calories and fat does it have?”.  There is less concern about quality nutrition.   Hopefully, this will shift for you as I lead you down this journey.

I don’t have far to travel on this one.  Like I said in the previous post; I haven’t really given up on the healthy way of eating, but I have been lax in some areas.  For instance, I really like alcoholic beverages, namely Sangria or a good stiff Vodka Tonic. I should definitely cut out the sugary drinks, and all alcohol is full of empty calories. That’s part of making good “quality nutrition” choices.  You could have diet tonic with your vodka and reduce the caloric intake to 100 calories. I could easily have 2 of those without too much worry, but not daily. But still, they are empty calories.  I have also allowed small amounts of sugar and enriched flour back into my diet. The sugar, enriched flour and Sangria have got to go!

Fortunately, I have a friend that just started a new diet. Which encourages me even more to take full action.  She called this morning to announce that even after ONE day of “eating clean” she feels 1/2 the body pain she usually feels each morning.  She decided to try the Eating Clean Diet by Tosca Reno. As far as I can tell, it goes right along with what I have done in the past.  Eating Clean has a huge online presence so I can glean more from the site and hopefully dig out new recipes for zucchini, squash and egg plant, some of my personal favorites.
